Atomic Mass Dependence of Hadron Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering on Nuclei

چکیده

Hadron production in lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering is studied in an absorption model. In the proposed model, the early stage of hadronization in the nuclear medium is dominated by prehadron formation and absorption, controlled by flavor-dependent formation lengths and absorption cross sections. Computations for hadron multiplicity ratios are presented and compared with the HERMES experimental data for pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons. The mass-number dependence of hadron attenuation is shown to be sensitive to the underlying hadronization dynamics. Contrary to common expectations for absorption models, a leading term proportional to A2/3 is found. Deviations from the leading behavior arise at large mass-numbers and large hadron fractional momenta.

Erratum: Atomic Mass Dependence of Hadron Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering on Nuclei

A mistake in the computer program performing the power law fit of the numerical computation of the hadron attenuation ratio R M has been detected. The mistake affects all fits which include the Xe nucleus. Below we present corrected results for table 2 and Figs. 8-10. Based on the corrected calculation we revise our conclusion in ref. [1]. The A 2/3 power law for 1 − R M in the absorption model...

A dependence of hadron production in inelastic muon scattering and dimuon production by protons.

The A dependence of the production of hadrons in inelastic muon scattering and of the production of dimuons in high Q 2 proton interactions are simply related. Feynman x distributions and z scaling distributions in nuclei are compared with energy loss models. Suggestions for new data analyses are presented.

Hadronization in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on nuclei

A series of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering measurements on deuterium, helium, neon, krypton, and xenon targets has been performed in order to study hadronization. The data were collected with the HERMES detector at the DESY laboratory using a 27.6 GeV positron or electron beam. Hadron multiplicities on nucleus A relative to those on the deuteron, Rh A, are presented for various hadron...

Confinement and the Transverse Lattice∗

Deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering has played a fundamental role in the investigation of hadron structure. For example, the discovery of Bjorken scaling confirmed the existence of point-like charged objects inside the nucleon (quarks). Besides such fundamental discoveries, deep inelastic scattering (DIS) revealed surprising and interesting details about the structure of nucleons and nuclei...

Hadron production in deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering

Predictions for semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering are presented. Both the effects of gluon radiation by the struck quark and the absorption of the produced hadron are considered. The gluon radiation covers a larger window in virtuality Q2 because of the increased deconfinement of quarks inside nuclei. The absorption of hadrons formed inside the nucleus is described with a ...
